coffeexbeans asked: Hi dear, so I have wanted to go into fashion since I was ten. However, I was always discouraged from any form of art. Now that I have taken control of my life and decided to go to fashion school I was wondering if you have any tips on creating a portfolio and do you know schools look for? Thank you and have a lovely day xx
First, we want to say we’re so glad you decided to take control and go with what you love! That is awesome. Keep a look out on our blog for our post talking about negative views surrounding art related fields. Now onto answering your question: portfolio requirements vary by school so you’d have to figure out the schools you want to attend and check out what they require. Now if you are just creating a fashion portfolio for yourself or a future employer, then you can just put them all together.
Tips we would give on creating a portfolio would be:
1. Start early. You want to start as early as you can on making one. Draw when you can, take photos, create garments - anything you can put in your portfolio start doing it. That way, you can perfect your art by the time you start applying to schools or when you take it to be seen by someone in the fashion industry.
2. Be creative. Make sure your work stands out. Create things that would make someone go, “You designed that!?”. If you make garments, then make sure when taking photos that they look as professional as possible.
3. Take art classes. It you are not that good at drawing sketches, then take some classes. Also, if your school offers classes that teach you how to use Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, take them! Perfecting these skills will definitely help in the future.
We hope this answer your question! If you have anymore, don’t hesitate to ask.
